Other recommendations:
How People Grow Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, (Zondervan Publishing, Grand Rapids, MI., 2001) These two well-known Christian psychologists have written a book with a nice balance of Biblical teachings and psychological truths that will help you gain insight into living more deeply committed to Jesus Christ in the midst of the realities and challenges of life
Standing on the Promises Dr. Lewis Smedes, (Nelson Publishing, 1998) Dr. Smedes, Professor Emeritus of Fuller Theological Seminary, wrote this book for those who are looking for hope especially in the midst of crisis. Smedes combines an uncanny ability to understand life and how God impacts life at its most crucial moments.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families Stephen Covey, (Golden Books, 1997) For those of you looking for a book on the family, this is a golden oldie. Covey applies his award-winning principles for individual effectiveness to the family. Though not explicitly Christian, this is a simple, applicable, practical book for families looking for guidance in developing a sense of family mission.
Reaching for the Invisible God Philip Yancey, (Zondervan Publishing, Grand Rapids, MI., 2000) This is Yancey's latest contribution to understanding the paradoxes of faith in practice. This prolific Christian author walks us through an understandable discussion on some tough issues of faith. This book is for those who are seeking answers to some common questions asked about God and faith.
If You Want to Walk on Water You've Got to Get Out of the Boat John Ortberg, (Zondervan Publishing, Grand Rapids, MI., 2001) Pastor Ortberg, of the Willow Creek Church in the greater Chicago area, writes for those desiring a deeper walk with God. The writer is challenging without being offensive. He gives humorous yet insightful illustrations to help the reader apply Biblical truths in their daily lives.
Soul Tsumani Dr. Leonard Sweet, (Zondervan Publishing, Grand Rapids, MI., 1999) Dr. Sweet, Dean of Theology at Drew University, offers a terrific description of the affects and implications that the post-modern world mindset has on our world. In this book, Sweet uses an unusual wit and uncanny honesty to help Christians and the church to face the unique task of being a lifeboat in the midst of a cultural tidal wave. This may be the most edgy and relevant book on this list.
